Performed when the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated procedures. The infected tissue is carefully removed, the inside is cleaned and disinfected, and the canals are sealed to prevent further infection. A root canal relieves pain and saves your natural tooth.
Sometimes a tooth that previously had a root canal may not heal properly or may become infected again. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing old filling material, cleaning the canals again, and resealing them. This can often save the tooth and prevent extraction.
When infection persists at the tip of the root even after a root canal, an apicoectomy removes the tip of the root and seals the area. This minor surgical procedure eliminates infection and preserves the natural tooth.
